The Investor's Edge: Understanding Pokémon Card "Destruction Rate"
In the world of Pokémon TCG investing, there's a powerful, little-known metric that savvy investors use to predict which modern cards will become valuable in the future: the destruction rate.
But what is it, and how can you use it?
What is the Destruction Rate?
The "destruction rate" isn't about physically destroying cards. It's a term for the rate at which sealed products (like booster packs) are opened, or "destroyed," to find the cards inside.
Think of it this way: every time someone opens a booster pack, the number of available sealed packs of that set goes down. This increases the scarcity of the remaining sealed products, which can drive up their long-term value.
How Can We Possibly Track This?
It sounds impossible to track, but there's a clever way to estimate it: by tracking the PSA population report.
The PSA population report is a public database that shows how many copies of each card have been graded by PSA. When a new set is released, the number of graded cards is zero. As people open packs and send their valuable "hits" to be graded, the PSA population for that set's cards goes up.
By monitoring the rate of increase in the PSA population for a given set, we can estimate how many packs are being opened. This gives us a proxy for the "destruction rate" of the sealed product.
Why Does the Destruction Rate Matter?
Tracking the destruction rate gives you two key insights:
- Sealed Product Scarcity: A high destruction rate means that sealed boxes of that set are becoming rarer, faster. This could be a strong signal to invest in sealed products for that set, as their value is likely to increase due to scarcity.
- Card Popularity: A high destruction rate also shows which sets are the most popular for people to open. This is a good indicator of high collector demand, which often translates to strong long-term value for the set's chase cards.
How to Track the Destruction Rate
Manually tracking the PSA population report is a tedious process. That's why we built the Destruction Tracker.
Our tool automates this process, giving you a clear, easy-to-understand view of the market. With the tracker, you can:
- See which sets have the highest destruction rate right now.
- Compare the destruction rates of different sets over time.
- Identify which sealed products are becoming scarce the fastest.
The destruction rate is an advanced metric, but it's one of the most powerful tools for predicting future market movements. By adding this to your analysis toolkit, you can gain a significant edge and make more informed, profitable investment decisions.
